BBQ Jackfruit pulled pork
I remember the first time my friend asked me to try a jackfruit burger, I was like “uh? Fruit in a burger?” But trust me, after you tried this, you wouldn’t believe that “fruit” in the burger really tastes mind-blowing.
Here are other delicious Vegan burgers: Quick n Easy Vegan Burger, Vegan BLT with Tempeh Bacon.
Can you believe it only takes about 15 minutes? Yap, I mean it,15 minutes including cooking the chips in the air-fryer at the same time!
So if you’re still looking for the ultimate burger, this BBQ Jackfruit pulled pork will quickly become your favorite, you’ll slow-clap after your first bite of this burger, I promise!
What is Jackfruit?
Let’s talk about the Magic “Jackfruit,” an exotic spiky fruit that has always been at the top of the favorite meaty plants for Vegans.
Also known as the Jack tree, it is a species of tree in the fig, mulberry, and breadfruit family. Its origin is in the region between the Western Ghats of southern India, all of Sri Lanka, and the rainforests of Malaysia.
Ripe jackfruit has a subtly sweet and fruity flavor. It has been said to taste similar to a combination of fruits, including apples, pineapples, mangoes, and bananas, usually used for sweets and desserts.
For cooking savory dishes, we use young (also called green or unripe) jackfruit, it has an entirely different consistency and usage than when it’s ripe. The texture of green jackfruit is closer to pulled pork( the look and bites!)
Fresh jackfruits are not cheap or easily accessible outside of Asia, so most of the time I use tinned jackfruit.
Every time I go to Asian supermarkets, I always stock up loads of them because they’re so much cheaper at Asian supermarkets. But if you can’t find them at your local shops, don’t worry, you can buy them from Amazon.
P.S. Make sure you’re buying Young or Green Jackfruit in water or brine, not in syrup (it’s sweet!) or ripe jackfruit!
Ingredients for BBQ Jackfruit pulled pork
- Young/Green Jackfruit in water or brine- Wash them under clean water for a couple of times, then drain, deseed( including the skin of the seeds) and shred them into smaller pieces.
- Coleslaw– I bought packets of coleslaw mix from supermarkets then just simply add Vegan Mayo and salt to it.
- BBQ Sauce– the good news is, that most BBQ sauce are Vegan-friendly! But don’t forget to always double-check again before purchasing. (Some might contain Worcestershire sauce. Worcestershire sauce traditionally contains anchovies or fish sauce)
- Light Soy Sauce– Ha~ a bit wired, right? But I found light soy sauce gives the sauce a different layer of savoriness. As alwasy, L.K.K brand is the best!
- Cumin seeds– I like to use cumin seeds, but you can also use ground cumin, need to cut the amount by half (ground spices are usually stronger).
- Garlic powder and Ground Black Pepper
- Vegan Burger Buns– any kind of Vegan burger bun, white, wholegrain, Rye or gluten-free…etc. it’s totally up to you!
