Jocote is a fruit beginning with j. Scientifically known as Spondia purpurea, a small tropical fruit. Throughout Central America, particularly in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. 

Jocote fruits grow on deciduous trees in tropical climates. They develop after tiny red flowers appear on the tree before leaves appear. Fruits of the jocote grow in clusters or alone along thick, knobby branches. 

Young Jocote fruit is green or yellowish-green and ripens to purple or red; some variants will ripen to yellow. When ripe, the pulp is yellow and sweet, similar to plums. However, there is an inedible pit or stone in the middle of the fruit.
