Tofu is a versatile plant-based protein source that can be used in a variety of dishes. This recipe for tofu marinated overnight in an Asian marinade is a delicious and easy way to enjoy tofu.

Tofu Marinated In Asian Marinade

Tofu is a type of bean curd, a popular ingredient in many Asian stir fry dishes, and has been a staple of vegetarian and vegan diets for decades.

It is made from soy milk that has been coagulated using a substance like calcium sulfate or nigari. It then undergoes pressing to remove excess water, resulting in its dense, almost rubbery texture.

I like tofu a lot, from panko-crusted tofu, tofu puffs, seaweed and tofu soup, and even tofu chocolate mousse!

Because tofu is kinda tasteless by itself, it works well with flavorful marinades that further enhance its subtle flavor profile. Marinades can infuse the tofu with sweet, salty, sour, and savory flavors depending on the ingredients used.

Tofu’s versatility also makes it an excellent substitute for meat in various dishes, making it an ideal source of plant-based protein for anyone who wants to try a vegan diet.

Marinating Tofu Tips And Suggestions

Marinating tofu is an essential step to infuse it with flavor and ensure that the marinade penetrates every inch of the block.

To get the most flavorful results, press the tofu before marinating as this eliminates any excess water, making room for more flavorful ingredients.

When you press the tofu, it releases excess water and creates a firmer texture that absorbs the marinade better. For maximum results, consider using a tofu presser or placing the block of tofu on a clean kitchen towel. Add pressure by placing something heavy on top of it.

Additionally, you should allow enough time for the tofu to absorb the marinade adequately – at least one hour but taste even better overnight in the fridge.

Adjusting The Marinade To Your Taste

Marinades are all about personal preferences, so feel free to adjust the recipe to your liking. If you like it spicy, add some paprika, chili powder, or chili flakes.

If you like a smoky flavor, you can add a dash of liquid smoke. You can also experiment with different types of vinegar and soy sauce to achieve different flavors.

Don’t be afraid to play around with seasonings and spices too! Ginger, garlic powder, onion powder, and sesame seeds are just a few examples of ingredients that can add depth and dimension to your marinade.

Ways To Cook Marinated Tofu

Air Frying: Add the tofu to the basket, and air fry at 400°F / 200°C for 20 minutes. Then pour the remaining marinade over the top and cook for a further 5 minutes.

Oven Bake: Place tofu on a parchment paper lined tray, and bake at 400°F / 200°C for 20 minutes until golden brown. Then pour the leftover sauce on top of the tofu and bake for another 5 minutes.

One option is to sauté, grill, or pan-fry the tofu for extra texture and flavor. You can also add some sliced vegetables like bell peppers, onions, and carrots to create a colorful stir-fry.

Non-stick pans work very well since they don’t require much oil during cooking which makes them ideal for protein-rich meals.

You may also want to use tongs or a spatula when turning over your marinated tofu slices while it cooks to easily move around.

How To Serve

Another tip is to pair the tofu with steamed rice or noodles for a complete meal. This will not only balance out any spiciness from the marinade but also make it more filling.

Garnishing with chopped scallions or cilantro adds freshness while sesame seeds give an extra crunch.

In addition, remember that leftover tofu can be used in salads, sandwiches, tacos, or even wraps. The possibilities are endless when it comes to this versatile ingredient!

Can You Use The Same Marinade For Other Dishes?

Don’t limit yourself to only marinating tofu in this Asian marinade sauce. The same marinade can be used for other dishes as well.

Try using it on vegetables, tempeh, or even corn ribs for an added burst of flavor.
