Notes

  • Rising time will vary depending on how warm the ambient temperature is. Warmer dough will rise faster.
  • To make the best-ever overnight cinnamon rolls for easy morning consumption, follow the recipe up until the second rise the night before. Before allowing the second rise to happen, cover the pan tightly and place it in the fridge overnight. In the morning, remove the rolls from the fridge and allow them to come to room temperature before baking.
  • Baked rolls can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer and reheated in the oven before eating.
  • Yeast can easily be found in any baking goods store or grocery.

What Are Cinnamon Rolls

vegan cinnamon roll filling

Cinnamon rolls are typically made from a sweet, yeast-based dough that is rolled out into a thin rectangle, spread with a mixture of cinnamon, sugar, and butter, and then rolled up tightly into a log shape.

This log is then sliced into individual rolls, which are placed in a baking dish close together, so they touch as they rise and bake.

The rolls are often baked until they are golden brown and then topped with a sweet icing or glaze made from powdered sugar, milk, or cream, and sometimes a touch of vanilla extract.

This icing adds an extra layer of sweetness and flavor to the already decadent cinnamon filling.

They are known for their warm, comforting aroma and their soft, gooey, and slightly crispy texture.

This is a great recipe and is a popular breakfast pastry in many parts of the world, particularly in North America and Northern Europe.

History And Origin

Cinnamon rolls, as we know them today, are often associated with Sweden. In Sweden, they are called “kanelbulle” or “kanelbullar.”

The Swedish cinnamon roll, with its characteristic spiraled shape and cinnamon-sugar filling, is thought to have gained popularity in the 18th century.

Swedish immigrants brought their love of cinnamon rolls to the United States and other parts of the world. Over time, cinnamon rolls became a beloved pastry in many Western cultures, with variations and regional twists added to the recipe.

Today, cinnamon rolls are enjoyed in numerous countries and come in various styles. Some are small and bite-sized, while others are large and gooey.

In North America, they are often served with cream cheese frosting, while in other places, they might have a simple powdered sugar glaze.

🥧 Vegan cream cheese frosting – You can add this to your cinnamon rolls to have a creamy and tangy element. This will also add a different layer of sweetness.

🥧 Melted vegan butter – Instead of oil, you can use melted butter to make the dough or the pan glaze. This will add a nutty, buttery profile to your cinnamon rolls. Or you can spread the softened vegan butter on hot cinnamon rolls for a super easy breakfast or brunch.

🥧 Pumpkin pie filling – You can use store-bought pumpkin pie filling to make pumpkin cinnamon rolls. It has an earthy-sweet taste that will go well with our base recipe. This is great for Thanksgiving or Halloween gatherings this fall.

🥧 Almond milk – You can use this in place of the oat milk. Note that almond milk has a nutty flavor and will change the taste of dough and glaze.

🥧 Gluten-free flour – You can use almond flour or find gluten-free all-purpose flour to make cinnamon rolls fit your special diet.
